Our History
Sigma Kappa was founded on November 9, 1874 at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. The Alpha Chapter at Colby College was formed by Mary Caffrey Low, Elizabeth Gorham Hoag, Ida Fuller, Frances Mann and Louise Helen Coburn. These incredible women formed a prestigious social and literary society, emulating the male fraternities on campus.
The five founders were then joined by 20 other women, to create a total of 25 chapter members. Sigma Kappa became so popular at Colby College that the Beta and Gamma chapter formed soon after. In 1904, Sigma Kappa established the Delta chapter at Boston University, the first chapter outside of Colby College.
More than 100 years later, there are 109 Sigma Kappa chapters nationwide in 37 states.
