Sigma Kappa's Philanthropies
Community Service
Sigma Kappa Sorority provides many opportunities for members to become involved in community service
and philanthropic projects. Chapters across the country support Sigma Kappa philanthropies, which
include:

Gerontology
In 1954 Sigma Kappa became the first national sorority to recognize the need for continued,
comprehensive work on the study of aging and the needs of elderly populations. Collegiate and alumnae
members throughout the country volunteer their time and talent in support of numerous projects to assist
and benefit the elderly.

Alzheimer's Disease
In 1984 Sigma Kappa responded to an increasingly critical problem facing older Americans by adding
Alzheimer's Disease research and education to its philanthropic activities. Research grants are made
each year to universities and other institutions actively engaged in the fight against Alzheimer's Disease.
Epsilon Beta's Philanthropies on Campus

Our chapter is very excited about philanthropy event that took place this fall!  Our "King of Hearts" male beauty contest was a
huge success and hit on UNO's campus.  All proceeds went to our Alzheimer's Disease philanthropy. This year's event will be on
November 7th at 7pm.

We also created a partnership with Ville St. Marie, a local assisted living center to play Bingo, attend various functions like their
Luau Party, do arts and crafts, and visit with the wonderful people there!  We also did a Fashion Show involving our members
and the residents at Ville St. Marie! Our chapter hopes to hold a Senior Prom for the residents at the centers to dress up, dance,
and enjoy a nice event.  It's amazing how most never forget how to dance!  This event is part of our gerontology philanthropy.

Sigma Kappas also volunteered in St. Bernard Parish to rebuild the community's playground that was destroyed by arson on New
Year's Eve. Sigma Kappas helped spread gravel and wood chips on the playground. Through this community effort, the children
of St. Bernard Parish now have a beautiful playground thanks to volunteers like Sigma Kappa members. A picket for the fence
around the playground was bought in Sigma Kappa's name at the University of New Orleans.

Our 2nd annual kick ball tournament,"Kick in the Grass", will be held Saturday, April 12th on campus for all UNO organizations to
participate in to help us raise money for Alzheimer's Disease Research. We had 6 teams participate including Tau Kappa
Epsilon, Phi Kappa Theta, Lambda Chi Alpha and Zeta Tau Alpha, Kappa Sigma, Latin American Student Association (LASA),
and the Orientation Leaders. Congratulations to out to LASA for winning 1st place in the tournament and Phi Kappa Theta
Fraternity for placing second. Visit the
Kick in the Grass page for more pictures!

Memory Walk..."When Others Forget, We Remember"
Each November, our chapter participates by walking and raises money for the Alzheimer's Disease Association's Memory Walk
held at Audubon Park. This year's walk will be on November 1, 2008.

THINK PINK with UNO Athletics, Sigma Kappa Sorority, National Women's Basketball
Coach's Association and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation

Members of the Epsilon Beta Chapter co-sponsored a THINK PINK event with UNO Athletics and the National Women's Basketball Coach's
Association to help raise over $2,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation at the UNO Lady Privateers Basketball game against University of
Louisiana Monroe on Saturday, February 9th. The two basketball teams wore pink for the game. Sigma Kappa handed out pink beads to fans before
the game and asked for donations and pledges for every three pointer basket that was made by either team during the game.

Philanthropy
Sigma Kappa Chapters across the country
sell lollipops to raise money for Alzheimer's
Disease Research.  We are trying to raise
as much money as we can for this worthy
cause and increase awareness for the fight
against Alzheimer's Disease.  Sigma
Kappa is the second largest national
contributor to the Alzheimer's Disease
Research Foundation.
Each spring, the Sisters of Sigma Kappa
and the Brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha
partner together to host an "Easter Egg
Hunt" at the UNO Children's Center.

Sigma Kappa members also volunteer
their time at the UNO Children's Center to
do crafts with the children.

The Maine Sea Coast Mission
Since 1918 Sigma Kappa has paid homage
to its Maine roots by supporting the activities
of the Maine Sea Coast Mission. The Mission
delivers critical services to people in need
while striving to redress the root causes of
those needs. With the help of the 75-foot
mission vessel, Sunbeam V, direct programs
and services include church and pastoral
work, assistance to those in sickness and
poverty, financial aid, food banks, recycled
clothing shops, crisis intervention, youth
programs, and ministries in the field. The
Mission serves the islands from mid-coast to
Downeast Maine, as well as mainland
Hancock and Washington counties.
